Overview

Walter P Moore proudly announces that Rachel Calafell, P.E., has been named the 2015 recipient of the Javier F. Horvilleur Outstanding Young Structural Engineer Award. The Horvilleur Award is presented annually to one young structural engineer at the firm who has best exemplified excellence in technical design, client service, and business acumen. The award is named for and is in appreciative memory of Javier F. Horvilleur, P.E., (1954-2002) who was an inspirational leader-engineer in our firm for over two decades.

Rachel was nominated by Walter P Moore’s Senior Principal/Regional Director Dennis Wittry, who cited her strong technical skills, her commitment to her projects, and her personal high standard of performance. The nomination included a series of stories from firm principals for whom she has consistently delivered and was sprinkled with positive quotes from clients.

“She is a favorite of our clients and often receives unsolicited praise from clients and contractors.”

A Senior Associate and structural project manager in our Houston office, Rachel is a well-rounded engineer who serves both the company and the community. As a project manager, her projects have been consistently profitable, a testament to her exceptional knowledge and management skills. As the Houston office’s learning coordinator for two years, she has updated numerous standard details and mentored several young engineers. She has also published articles about projects and shared an adjunct professorship in the Architecture Department at the University of Houston.

Having joined Walter P Moore in June 2008 after earning her Master of Science in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University, Rachel Calafell exemplifies engineering excellence at Walter P Moore and highlights our ability to attract, develop, and platform the best and most-motivated young structural engineers in the world.

Fun fact about Rachel: she never made a ‘B’ in school in any grade and was recognized by USA Today as one of the top college students in the U.S., in any major.

Congratulations, Rachel!
