Moving the Earth: The University of Phoenix's Retractable Playing Field

"In the past the phrase “multi-purpose facility” as applied to a stadium conjured up images of the cookie-cutter designs of the 1970s that hosted both football and baseball equally poorly at a single venue. The generation of U.S. football stadiums that followed reacted by tailoring venues that created a spectacular fan experience on the 10 to 12 days the building was occupied each year. Today, such limited returns on investment for the community in venues with significant public financing components are no longer acceptable. At the University of Phoenix Stadium (Glendale, Arizona, USA), the stadium ownership partnership between the Arizona Cardinals and the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority (AZSTA) set out to prove that it was possible to create a world-class NFL venue that also served the community beyond Sundays.
