'...The sixth modern retractable roof stadium in the US, Cardinals Stadium is the first with a moving field. In less than 60 minutes the 243 ft x 403 ft field rolls quietly into or out of the stadium on steel wheels driven by electric motors. Though three other moving fields have been built in the world, this is the first built on wheels. The 9,500-ton moving field assembly, which slides out through a slot under the south grandstand, allows the natural turf to thrive under the bright Arizona sun except during field events. Walter P Moore’s design of the structure supporting the field included groundbreaking research on the appropriate stiffness of composite steel beam systems to provide a playable field surface that eliminates vibrations objectionable to players and coaches. After the first game, all parties were ecstatic with the performance of the field |
In addition to serving as home venue for the Arizona Cardinals NFL team, the moving field will allow the building to host a variety of conventions and special events.' |
