American Heart Association
Walter P Moore began supporting the American Heart Association’s HeartWalk in 1999. What started as a small group of Houston employees out walking for fun has evolved in a company-wide initiative. In 2006, Houston staff had their largest HeartWalk turnout and fundraising, with more than 50 employees in the Do MOORE Walking crew raising over $20,000.
Heart disease—the nation’s number one cause of death—has left its mark at Walter P Moore. In 2002, we lost one of our most charismatic leaders, Javier Horvilleur, who was head of structural engineering in Houston. And as we were in the midst of organizing our 2006 HeartWalk, another longtime employee, Natalie Woodruff, suddenly passed away from heart disease. Their sudden deaths remind us of the importance of the American Heart Association’s efforts and the need to help fund heart disease and stroke research and education.

Big Brothers Big Sisters
In February 2008, staff in our Austin office took to the lanes for the fourth year to support Bowl For Kids’ Sake, which benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas. Both Paulette Rudolph and Kate Tomilson of the Austin office mentor through BBBS's program of one-to-one relationships that help children reach their potential.
For the fundraiser, the Society for Marketing Professional Services recruited teams to participate in an A/E/C bowl night. We helped in the recruitment of 33 teams, two of which were from Walter P Moore—a first for us.
After a successful fundraising and fun event in 2007, Walter P Moore raised $3,430 in 2008, surpassing 2007’s $3,275. Our entire industry group raised over $34,000 and the total for the entire event was over $181,000. We are looking forward to next year's challenge.

Greater Houston Soap Box Derby Super Kids
The Greater Houston Soap Box Derby Superkids Competition for both 2005 and 2006 were powered by Walter P Moore as underwriting sponsor. In both of those years, a special needs child from the Houston area, Colt Podraza, went on to win the national Superkids competition. He’s the first repeat winner and was inducted into the National Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame.
Soap Box Derby racing is a uniquely American youth sport in which youngsters drive small motorless race cars in downhill competition. Super Kids is a nationwide program to promote Soap Box Derby racing for children with various levels of disabilities that would otherwise prevent them from participating in the Derby. |
