Theater District Flood Protection
Houston, Texas
Our study for the City of Houston evaluates and recommends improving both internal and external flood hazard mitigation systems and recommends measures based on a plan to protect the property at the perimeter of each of the facilities by the use of floodgates and flood doors. The primary threat of flooding comes from two sources: overbank flooding of Buffalo Bayou and street flooding when the storm sewers exceed design capacity. The worst situation occurs when both events occur simultaneously.
The City of Houston Theater District includes arts facilities (Jones Hall, Wortham Theater and Bayou Place), several parking facilities, Fire Station No.1 and the old Water Production Building. The majority of the facilities are situated on the southern side of Buffalo Bayou along on the northern portion of downtown Houston.
