FLOOD PROTECTION DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SEEN TO WORK

University of Texas Medical School Perimeter Berm
Houston, Texas

After the University of Texas Medical School suffered millions of dollars in damage and lost critical medical research data during Tropical Storm Allison, the university sought our flood protection solutions.

Two lines of defense were incorporated. A passive berm system was constructed to protect against a 100-year storm. A flood wall at the face of the building contains large flood gates that protect the openings into the building in case of a 500-year event.

The berm incorporates the existing elements of the campus to create unobtrusive protection that enhances the landscape character of the campus. Webber Plaza was landscaped after numerous utilities were relocated and large sump pits installed to ensure the plaza drained during extreme events.

The $10-million project was completed in 2005. We earned a Texas Council of Engineering Companies Silver Award for the project.
