DIAGONAL MAR CENTRO COMERCIAL
BARCELONA, SPAIN
Phase I included a retail block with approximately 350,000 square meters of retail space and below-grade parking for 5,100 cars.
The 24-meter (80-foot) deep excavation for the underground parking levels that extend 20 meters below the static groundwater level presented a number of design challenges. One million cubic meters of earth were excavated--one of the largest basement substructure excavations in the world. We considered several viable options before developing an efficient excavation retention slurry wall that also serves as foundation support for the building columns.
The lower levels were designed to economically support a 2-million-square-foot retail development in three levels above grade.
