DIAGONAL MAR CENTRO COMERCIAL
BARCELONA, SPAIN
Phase I included a retail block with approximately 1.15 million square feet (350,000 square meters) of retail space and below-grade parking for 5,100 cars.
The 80-foot-deep (24-meter) excavation for the underground parking levels that extend 65.6 feet (20 meters) below the static groundwater level presented a number of design challenges. More than 3.2 million cubic feet (1 million cubic meters) of earth were excavated—one of the largest basement substructure excavations in the world. We considered several viable options before developing an efficient excavation retention slurry wall that also serves as foundation support for the building columns.
The lower levels were designed to economically support a 2-million-square-foot (609,600-square-meter) retail development in three levels above grade.
