Diagonal Mar Centre Commercial
One block from the Mediterranean Sea lies this luxurious mixed-use development on a triangular-shaped site. Phase one of the development included 350,000 square meters of retail space and a parking structure. The lower levels were designed to economically support a 186,000 square meter (2 million square feet) retail development in three levels above grade. The property includes an 18-screen multiplex cinema and a hypermarket.
The underground parking levels extended 20 meter below the static groundwater level which presented a number of design challenges. These challenges were met by developing a retention slurry wall for an efficient excavation and also serve as the foundation support for exterior building columns. Construction was accelerated through use of a top-down method allowing for simultaneous excavation and construction of basement structural framing.
Construction included one of the largest substructure excavations in the world at 24 meters with approximately one million cubic meters of soil excavated.
