Multidisciplinary Solutions You Can Count On

U.S. Census Bureau
Headquarters Office Complex

Suitland, Maryland

Our multidisciplinary solutions for the Census Bureau will protect the buildings from progressive collapse, earned a LEED® Silver rating and consolidate operations for 6,000 employees in time for the 2010 census.

The two phases combined provide 1.5 million square feet and 3,100 parking spaces at a construction cost of approximately $331 million. The two buildings were built sequentially, replacing three office buildings on site and several leased buildings. Among the amenities are a shared daycare center, an auditorium, a library, a conference center and a cafeteria. The design of the new headquarters won a GSA Design Award.

The office buildings utilize a structural steel framing system. An extensive network of transfer girders satisfies the intent of the architectural design in the “Census Walk” open plaza between the two buildings. The parking garages use a composite precast/cast-in-place system with post-tensioned flat slabs. The Secure Design measures incorporated into the project satisfy the GSA Progressive Collapse Guidelines.
