A Great Place to Heal

Children's Hospital Central California
Madera, California

This important project expands the nation's 13th-largest freestanding children's hospital through a two-story addition and renovations of the existing hospital that sits on a 50-acre campus.

The $40-million, 113,760-square-foot addition and the renovation work include support space for dietary and stores on the ground floor, ED, Imaging and new patient beds on the first floor and surgery, Pre-Op, PICU and NICU on the second floor. Other additions include an icon structure and a canopy.

All expansion and renovation design included careful attention to the lateral bracing systems required to resist significant seismic loads. Special steel moment frames in accordance with the FEMA and AISC design guideline have been adopted to provide seismic resistance. To mitigate vibration and noise generated by imaging equipment and approaching emergency helicopters, special wall assemblies and isolated foundation and housekeeping pads have been developed to achieve ANSI Class B and C vibration criteria. The project is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2011.
