Mayo Clinic Expansion
Jacksonville, Florida
The $126-million expansion has three components: adding three stories and a penthouse to the top of the Mayo building, building a new tower adjacent to the Mayo building and filling in the wedge-shaped area in between the Mayo building and existing Davis building. The new six-story tower will provide 214 new beds, with future expansion capability to 16 floors and 500 beds.
An extensive study of different structural systems was performed. Structural steel with composite metal deck was selected for the floor framing. Lateral stability of the building was provided using cast-in-place concrete shear walls around the elevators and stairs and steel x-bracing at the two ends of the main tower.
