Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza and Parking Garage
Houston, Texas
The largest parking garage — 2400 spaces for visitors, patients and staff — in the world’s largest medical center serves the new Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza.
A tight project site was further restricted with buildings on all sides and heavy traffic flow from both vehicles and light-rail commuter trains. An enhanced entering/exiting strategy was needed. In conjunction with Walter P Moore’s Traffic Engineering group, our Parking consultants devised a clever dual-ramp system that provides access to all three nearby streets. In addition, we worked with the City of Houston to provide a traffic light dedicated to the project.
Two sky bridges and the nearby light-rail stop provided both design and construction challenges that we met with innovations such as a basement valet area to keep traffic from backing onto nearby streets and a second floor patient pickup area inside the garage.
Two payment systems are used in the garage: both a pay-on-foot system for sophisticated users and conventional booths for traditional users.
