major arterial gets major upgrade

Cook Road
Bissonnet Street to Bellaire Boulevard
Houston, Texas

The upgrade of this two-lane roadway to a four-lane boulevard section not only provides needed mobility improvements, but creates a new avenue for redevelopment in the area.

We designed a four-lane, divided concrete, curb-and-gutter section roadway to replace the two-lane asphalt, open ditch road section. The project also includes utility and drainage upgrades, stream crossings, pipeline crossings and traffic signal upgrades. The current storm drain system consisting of roadside ditches and culverts is to be upgraded to an underground storm sewer system. Our hydrological analysis delineated 13 drainage areas, each contributing to a collector to the main.

The pipes and slopes were sized using pertinent City of Houston criteria. We performed an impact analysis on two tributaries to Brays Bayou affected by the proposed storm sewers’ discharge.

The estimated completion date for this $11.6-million project is 2008.
