The Galveston National Laboratory – one of only two biocontainment labs in the country – is a national resource that complements UTMB's biomedical research program. Taking place at the GNL is research to develop therapies, vaccines and diagnostic tests for naturally occurring emerging diseases such as SARS, West Nile encephalitis and avian influenza – as well as for microbes that might be employed by terrorists. The 7-story, $174-million facility was dedicated in November 2008.
In addition, our civil services integrated the secure design elements into a pedestrian plaza. Several major utility, including water, gas, sanitary, chill water, steam, electrical and communications lines, were rerouted through the area on an accelerated process.
