Biomedical Engineering in the Heart of Georgia Tech

U.A. Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Building
Georgia Institute of Technology

Atlanta, Georgia

The Whitaker Building is the new home of Georgia Tech and Emory University’s joint program, the Coulter School of Biomedical Engineering, which is the only public-private joint academic department in the country.

The $23-million facility is one of four buildings that make up the new Life Sciences and Technology Complex in the heart of the campus. The 90,000-square-foot Biomedical Engineering Research and Educational Facility includes research laboratories and classrooms, as well as a pedestrian bridge connection to the adjacent Petit Biotechnology Building.

Our structural solution for this four-story, brick-clad building utilizes a flat-slab, reinforced concrete floor system that minimizes the building’s height and provides strength and acceptable vibration performance for high laboratory live loads.
