Historic courthouse to be restored to 1910 glory
1910 Harris County Courthouse Renovation
Houston, Texas
Harris County is restoring its original downtown civil courthouse to its 1910 glory. We were chosen as structural and restoration consultant. This project poses unusual and complex design problems.
Renovation includes removal of slabs and walls installed during the 1950s modernization, as well as the reinstallation of original historical elements removed or covered up. Challenges include the lack of complete documentation, determining the structural capacity of the existing structure, relocating the elevators back to their original locations and minimizing disturbances to the hidden original 1910 finishes.
We determined the structural capacity of the existing structure by excising material samples from the building and conducting the appropriate testing. A comprehensive restoration package is being developed for this historic courthouse.
