When this 870-foot-tall, 60-story tower was topped out, it was the tallest building in the Southeast U.S. and the world’s third tallest concrete-frame building.

The tower anchors a mixed-use complex that includes the N.C. Blumenthal Center for the Arts, 50,000 square feet of retail space and an adjacent 1,200-car parking facility connected by a pedestrian bridge.

We analyzed a variety of feasible structural systems before selecting an economical reinforced concrete frame. Concrete was selected because it met both the intricate geometric requirements and the demand of the developers for economy, column-free office spaces and minimum floor-to-floor heights.

We used a perimeter frame as part of the lateral system that also incorporated a Vierendeel concrete truss to accommodate the signature steps in the floor plate.
