Financial Center and Renaissance Hotel
Panama City, Panama
Before Walter P Moore’s involvement in the 39-story, 150m-tall Renaissance Hotel, the original structural design included story-deep outrigger walls on two floors, as well as perimeter beams at every level. Walter P Moore optimized the structural frame and, with minor revisions to the core, was able to immediately eliminate all outrigger walls as well as the perimeter beams. Accordingly, two levels were deleted, saving the owner approx $1M. The hotel construction is scheduled to be complete in early 2011.
The 56-story, 215m-tall Financial Center was already under construction when Walter P Moore was hired to study the structural frame for inefficiencies. A peer review indicated there were opportunities for improvement. The original structural design included two outrigger levels with 5 lines of outrigger walls in one direction and 3 lines of outrigger walls in the transverse direction. Walter P Moore optimized the structural system and reduced 75% of the tower's outrigger walls, allowing the owner to save over $1M through this revised structural frame. The office will top out in the summer of 2010.
