The natural inspiration for The Crossing is the symmetric hyperbolic shape of a tornado. The tower structure features a perimeter diagrid inspired by two opposing hyperboloids joined at their small ends to resist all lateral wind and seismic loads. The diagrid offers an extremely flexible interior column layout and eliminates the need for bulky concrete core walls.
Though the overall shape appears to be curved, it is comprised solely of straight segments, yielding a structure that is repetitive and hence extremely economical to fabricate and erect.

Inspiration

The inspiration is drawn from the highly
symmetrical and simple hyperbolic shape of a tornado.
The science is based off of a doubly-ruled
hyperboloid. A structure of this shape is extremely
economical and repetitive. Though the overall shape appears to be curved, it is made only with straight line segments.
