Nautilus Tower personifies the innate characteristics of proportion, rhythm, growth, and resilience found only in a nautilus shell. The structural frame is fully integrated with the architectural form of this 80 story, 1350 foot tall office tower. A steel cylindrical moment frame is wrapped with a helical steel braced frame to provide lateral resistance. Approximately half of the overall tower stiffness is provided by the helical brace, thereby leveraging the efficiency of Fibonnacci’s Sequence as a primary structural element.

Inspiration

The inspiration is drawn from a Nautilus shell. A nautilus shell resembles harmony, rhythm, growth, and resilience. The helical shape and the chambers are extremely lightweight, yet this shell is still extremely strong.
The science looks at Fibonacci Mathematics
and the golden ratio. The nautilus shell is based
off of the golden ratio of 1.618. Each chamber is
exactly 1.618 larger than the last, and the overall
proportions of the shell are based on the golden
ratio.
