TOLLWAYS, TIME & MONEY

Sam Houston Toll Road Widening,
Clay Road to Tanner Road
Houston, TX

Of the 83-miles of toll roads serving Houston's nearly 600-square-mile metropolitan area, the West Sam Houston Toll Road is the largest revenue generator for the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA).

...which means it's the most heavily used. Keeping toll road revenues up and travel time down are essential to the nation's fourth largest and one of its fastest growing cities. When the West Sam Houston Toll Road began to experience significant peak-hour delays, we were brought in to engineer additional capacity and operational improvements to approximately 1.5 miles between Clay and Tanner roads.

Our scope of work included widening northbound lanes by adding a shoulder to the outside lane. We redesigned the entrance ramp profile and geometry. This involved our civil, traffic, and transportation engineers in designing a wider bridge and new retaining walls, as well as performing hydraulic analysis for drainage improvements. In addition to pavement markings and striping design, we developed traffic control plans to minimize mobility disruption during construction.
