EXPANDING FOR
EXPONENTIAL GROWTH

IH35E – Ellis County
From US 77 South of Waxahachie to US 77 North of Waxahachie
Ellis County, Texas

What started out as a freeway widening project quickly grew into a major reconstruction of the corridor. Walter P Moore helped the Texas Department of Transportation transform the project design to meet the needs of the community and intrastate travelers.

This project consist of providing engineering services required to produce design schematics and for the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates for the reconstruction of approximately 10.8 miles of IH 35E. The existing 4-lane freeway is being expanded to a 6-lane facility with provisions for future expansion to 8 lanes. This $110-million project includes pavement widening and reconstruction including the replacement or modification of 18 bridges and 6 bridge-class culverts.

Our project responsibilities included schematic development, drainage impact study and design at the Waxahachie and the North and South Grove creeks. We were responsible for upgrading the mainlane horizontal and vertical geometrics including superelevation rates and transitions to meet current design criteria and to accommodate 37 entrance and exit ramp locations. We also developed the construction sequencing and traffic control, retaining wall layouts and design, pavement markings and signing, and illumination for this access-controlled facility. Construction is estimated to be completed in 2010.
