PUBLIC (WORKS) SUPPORT
FOR A VIBRANT CORE

Downtown Street Improvements,
Milam Street from Pierce to Commerce
Houston, TX

In the decade from the mid-1990s to the present, downtown Houston has some $4 billion in private development. In this, the nation’s fourth largest city, public works projects are vital to a pattern of growth that seems destined to continue far into the future

As part of its Transit Street Program, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) hired us to provide project management and engineering services for the complete reconstruction of 21 blocks of Milam. From the Pierce elevated on the south end of the city’s urban core to Commerce Street at the north end, Milam has long been one of downtown’s most densely developed streets.

Our work involved both above and below grade engineering, including pavement reconstruction, signing, and pavement marking and redesign of sewer, storm sewer, and water systems. We were also responsible for developing and implementing a traffic control plan for this much used north-south artery. In addition to redesigning 22 traffic signals, we engineered a hardwired signal interconnect system along Milam that will accommodate fiber optic interconnects at some point in the future.
