HIGH-STAKES RESOLUTION

IH (Loop) 610 at US 59 Interchange
Houston, TX

The interchange at Loop 610 South and US 59 at the edge of the Galleria in Uptown Houston is one of America’s busiest interchanges. Keeping traffic flowing is an endless challenge. And there are many vested – and sometimes conflicting – interests.

The Texas Department of Transportation had developed an innovative scheme that proposed new direct connectors from Westheimer, just north of the interchange, to the Loop. However, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) and Uptown Houston had different ideas. Uptown Houston, specifically, favored a future high-capacity transit service through the interchange.

Uptown Houston brought us in to devise a strategy that would resolve the conflicting approaches. We investigated alternative ramp locations on US 59 and IH 610, as well as connections from the IH 610 frontage road to the HOV system on both US 59 and the Westpark Tollway. Our recommendations included the redesign of existing freeway and ramp geometry and intersection layouts, along with the relocation of some ramps.

The necessary corridor for future fixed-guideway transit was protected.
