COMPLEX ENGINEERING, COMPLEX STORY SIMPLIFIED

IH 610 Through Uptown Houston
Houston, TX

Uptown Houston, which borders Houston’s IH 610 Loop West, is a relatively small geographic part of the nation’s fourth largest city. Even so, it is the nation’s 14th largest business center, comparable in size to downtown Los Angeles. Mobility is crucial.

When the community’s numerous stakeholders failed to agree on how best to improve traffic flow along its heavily trafficked streets, we were asked to develop a solution that everyone—from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to local businesses and residential neighborhoods—could support.

Following analysis of freeway and street geometry, our engineers proposed a revised layout of interior streets and freeway on/off ramps. We recommended optimal driveway locations and layouts to serve retail center traffic while adhering to applicable zoning requirements.

Our fast-track schematic concepts were delivered to TxDOT in 90 days and approved, but at a cost of $50-million more than the original budget. We then helped craft the complex engineering story in a common language that enabled local officials to successfully lobby for the additional funds. The project was completed in 2006.
