West Campus Regional Detention Pond

Houston
Texas

Located on 144 acres in West Houston sits the Texas Medical Center (TMC) West Campus. This relatively new campus is home to, Houston Methodist West Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus. Walter P Moore prepared a drainage master plan and designed a regional detention facility for this campus which includes Park Row Boulevard. The master plan revised the original multiple detention pond design to a single detention facility, saving the owners construction costs and facilitating the permitting process. The design includes two interconnected wet ponds and an overland swale that jointly acts as a single detention facility. The outfall of the detention pond is to a Texas Department of Transportation storm sewer system. The ponds are designed to provide both runoff mitigation and storm water quality as well as rainwater capture for irrigation. Both hospitals are using the detention for irrigation and as an aesthetic feature.
