Performance Based Seismic Design

As building owners become increasingly sophisticated in evaluating facility lifecycle costs, they no longer find it sufficient to build to prescriptive seismic building code provisions that only protect the structure against falling down in an extreme earthquake. Many key buildings, such as hospitals, must function the day after or even during an earthquake. The latest in computational technology, coupled with extensive laboratory research, now allow engineers to simulate a variety of possible earthquakes and the resulting level of damage to the building. Using this technology, our engineers are able to go beyond prescriptive code provisions and implement seismic structural systems best suited to the owner’s needs.

Our capabilities include:

• Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis
• Development of site-specific response spectra and ground motions
• Nonlinear dynamic time history analysis
• Consultation with local building officials
