Overview

We are again honored to be recognized for excellence in restaurant design for Terroni DTLA by two prestigious award programs — the 2015 AIA|LA Restaurant Design Awards presented collaboratively with Dwell on Design, in which the team competed against more than 100 other submissions from across the world, and the Los Angeles Business Council’s annual Architectural Awards, which recognized more than 35 exceptional architectural projects and celebrated entire project teams (including architects, contractors, engineers, project managers, and developers) for “creating and building visionary, outstanding structures in LA County.”

We also congratulate our architectural partners Giannone Petricone Associates Inc. (design architect) and Garai-Terramorse Associates (architect of record). Walter P Moore provided structural engineering services for the Terroni Downtown LA restaurant.

Located in the National City Bank building at 8th and Spring, the new restaurant embraces the building’s historic architectural details and adds a contemporary twist. The vintage ornamental plaster ceiling is complemented by three distinctive light fixtures, including a sleek red chandelier modeled after the Autodromo Nazionale Monza where the Formula One Italian Grand Prix takes place. A new wine bar with unique sculpted wood paneling divides the space and creates an intimate atmosphere. A large glassed-in wine room displays bottles of vino and colorful jars of roasted peppers and olives.

The 1924 building originally functioned as a bank, so the renovation included the complete build-out of the kitchen space and a new mezzanine for mechanical equipment. The existing mezzanine was completely renovated and can be used for private events. A thoughtful structural solution was required to minimize the impact to the existing structure and preserve the historic architectural elements.

Prior to this tenant improvement, Walter P Moore designed the seismic retrofit for the building as part of the adaptive reuse.
