AHA MOMENT: While providing aid after the January 2001 magnitude 7.6 earthquake off the coast of El Salvador, I walked into the home of a family who was afraid to stay inside because of cracks in the walls and the persistent aftershocks. I thought, "How can I help them know if their home is safe?" Looking back, that marked the beginning of my journey into structural engineering.
