AIG Garage Expansion

Houston
Texas

The American General Center Garage on AIG’s Houston campus involves a vertical expansion of the existing garage originally designed by Walter P Moore in the 1980s. The expansion was completed in two phases and includes three additional floors of post-tensioned concrete and the extension of two elevator towers.

The main challenge for the garage expansion was anticipating the sequencing of construction to minimize impact to existing parking/number of lost spaces. We prepared phasing studies which gave the owner estimates of parking spaces lost or gained as construction progressed. The contractor used this information as basis for construction sequencing and were able to meet or exceed the expected levels of parking throughout the project.

In addition, we were able to eliminate the use of pour strips for the new levels of the garage, which substantially reduced construction time.
