Walter P Moore provided civil and structural engineering for a new buildings in the Texas Medical Center. One of the oldest nursing programs in the state, the Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing, has for many years, occupied a prime location in the Texas Medical Center area. The ultimate goal of this project was to increase teaching space to accommodate their growing programs and enhance their visibility in the Texas Medical Center area.

The program of the building required 110,000 square feet of immediate occupancy, with the capacity for vertical expansion as the program grows. A 1,000 space car garage is also included in order to meet not only Prairie View A&M’s needs, but also the needs of the growing Texas Medical Center area institutions.

The new College of Nursing houses classrooms, distant education classrooms, human simulation labs, skills labs, computer facilities and a large auditorium. The site was extremely constrained, with great consideration given to construction phasing, equipment placement, and utility relocations – all designed to fit within the site, without the requirement of easements.
