Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Convention Center Hotel
Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Convention Center Hotel
At 365 feet, the Sheraton is the tallest hotel in Arizona. Just minutes away from Phoenix’s airport, the hotel was built by the City of Phoenix to support the growing business at the nearby Phoenix Convention Center. The hotel offers a ballroom and numerous meeting rooms, as well as all the amenities expected by modern travelers including a spa and fitness facility, rooftop pool and deck, al fresco dining and below grade parking.
As structural engineer and parking consultant, Walter P Moore developed an efficient structural grid for the tower that also worked for the two below grade parking levels. The tight downtown site required a creative top-down construction process with perimeter retention on all sides. To address the relatively slender aspect ratio of the tower, we worked closely with the wind consultant to develop accurate wind loads, and then developed an efficient lateral system that features embedded wide flange steel link beams to efficiently provide appropriate lateral stiffness against wind loads in the narrow direction of the building.
