Texas Tech University - Jones AT&T Stadium Addition
Walter P Moore provided structural engineering services for the new east side addition to Jones AT&T Stadium on the campus of Texas Tech University. With a budget of $34.6 million, the 125,000 square foot expansion added 544 new club seat as well as 26 private suites. Two lower floors in the building were left as shell space to allow for future expansion of administrative offices while a new kitchen and team retail store were added on the mezzanine and ground floors respectively.
The structural system includes a steel moment frame with composite steel floor beams. The club and suite level seating is framed with precast stadia units supported on wide flange steel rakers and abuts the existing bowl structure. A combination of brick and precast panels where used in order to match the existing stadium’s Spanish architectural motif. Prior to the completion of the east side expansion, a north end zone expansion was added in the fall of 2009 adding about 6,100 seats. Walter P Moore performed preliminary concept studies for a cast-in-place structure, while the final structural system recommended was to be precast.
The east side expansion project was completed in August 2010. Combined with the north end zone expansion, the current stadium’s seating capacity will increase to 61,000 screaming Red Raider fans.
