USF Interdisciplinary Science Teaching and Research Center
USF Interdisciplinary Science Teaching and Research Center
This multi-story facility was designed to meet the University of South Florida’s interdisciplinary teaching and research needs for the upper and lower divisions of its physics, chemistry, and biology programs. The large multi-user shared core facility contains large lecture halls, classrooms, modern teaching laboratories, and offices for faculty, study areas, and shell space. In addition, there are two 300-seat lecture halls, a bio-nano research laboratory, an imaging center, and a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facility.
The building supports multidisciplinary research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and includes the BITT Center of Excellence, a life science thrust initiative and functional multi-scale materials by design thrust initiative. It also accommodates the recently federally funded Center for Integrated Functional Materials in the physics department.
The design of this building incorporated sustainable building practices to ensure the highest standards of indoor air quality, multiple open plan areas to provide natural light, and views of the outdoors, plus an atrium space without losing any program space or adding to the project cost.
