UT Austin UFCU Disch-Falk Field Stadium Expansion

UFCU Disch-Falk Field is the home of the University of Texas at Austin Baseball Team and is widely recognized as one of the best collegiate baseball facilities in America. Named for former Longhorns coaches Billy Disch and Bibb Falk, the facility seats more than 8,000 spectators but the NCAA College World Series champions were in need of a championship caliber facility renovation.

Walter P Moore and Rogers Moore Engineers provided structural engineering services for the $18 million expansion of the existing UFCU Disch-Falk Field which features new clubs and suites at the top of the upper concourse as well as a much needed upgrade and expansion of the press club. The project also includes a new player development area consisting of a much larger weight room, home locker room, coaches’ offices and support areas in the lower level. The existing batting tunnels were relocated and refurbished. Each side of the field has a new dugout, and the seating areas were expanded in towards the field to increase the seat counts. Accessible seating areas were added in the lower concourse and the fan amenities (concessions, restrooms) were upgraded.

Among the special structural challenges were the upgrading of the existing light standards to include two new light standards at the ends of the existing canopy. To accomplish this, a careful and detailed analysis of the web-tapered plate girders was required for the effects of the new, taller light standards.
