Walter P Moore provided structural engineering services for the 42,000 SF addition to the Jamerson Athletic Center, adjacent to Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium. The three-story structural steel building addition includes a lobby, locker rooms and offices for the Hokie’s football program as well as a new wrestling floor on the third floor. In addition to the typical complications that accompany abutting a new building to existing, the elevated wresting floor presented additional challenges for the design team in keeping vibrations and noise from disturbing the spaces on the floor below. Walter P Moore performed a vibration study to stiffen the floor to an appropriate level to negate the effects of wrestlers being tossed about on the mat above. The stout floor framing will keep the ceiling tiles from trembling with each thud of a wrestler hitting the floor.
