Synopsis
In Houston’s urban core, heat resilience is more than a comfort issue, it’s a public works challenge. The Main Street Promenade demonstrates how technology, landscape architecture, and smart infrastructure can come together to reduce corridor temperatures by up to 5°F, while transforming streets once dominated by cars into green, people-centered public spaces.
Faced with complex underground utilities and basement vaults that limited tree planting, the design team, led by Downtown Houston+, Walter P Moore, and Design Workshop, used data-driven canopy modeling, native vegetation, reflective pavements, and custom solar-powered shade structures to build a continuous cooling network. This presentation explores how climate adaptation, smart materials, and public-private collaboration can reshape downtowns nationwide into resilient, walkable, and welcoming destinations.
