Synopsis

Understanding dam safety regulations is vital for floodplain managers working to protect communities and infrastructure. This workshop provides an overview of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Dam Safety regulations, explaining how dams are defined, classified, analyzed and managed showcasing real world examples. Key topics include: Regulations: TCEQ defines and classifies dams based on size and hazard potential, setting hydrologic design criteria to ensure compliance with state and federal safety standards.

Hydrology & Hydraulics: H&H analyses determine the design storm, spillway capacities, and flood routing to evaluate a dam’s ability to safely convey the design flood. Inspections: Periodic inspections assess dam condition, maintenance, and performance, identifying issues like erosion or seepage that require corrective action. Breach Analysis: Breach analyses predict downstream impacts from dam failure and inform inundation mapping and Emergency Action Plans.
