Overview

Matthew R. Rechtien rejoins Walter P Moore as General Counsel after 12 years of practice at two Detroit-based law firms, most recently Bodman PLC where he was a member, and the Ann Arbor City Attorney’s Office. During that time, Matthew focused on construction law and commercial and insurance litigation. As General Counsel, Matthew counsels and represents a 700-plus employee, international engineering consulting firm on a full range of legal and related business concerns including insurance, contracting, risk management, claims, compliance, and other matters.

In his first stint with the firm, from 1999 to 2004, Matthew worked as a structural engineer in the Houston office before joining the team that founded the firm’s Austin office. During that time, Matthew worked on projects including Walter P Moore’s design of the Houston Rocket’s home, the Toyota Center; Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business; and the Austin Hilton Convention Center Hotel.

Matthew is a past president of the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan and has been recognized as a “Rising Star” in Construction Litigation by Michigan Super Lawyers. Additionally, Matthew has written and spoken extensively on topics such as engineering law and ethics and construction law.

Matthew earned his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in civil engineering from the University of Michigan, his master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and his Juris doctor degree with high honors in law from the University of Washington. He is a member of the Order of the Coif, Tau Beta Pi, and Chi Epsilon honor societies. He’s admitted to practice law in Michigan and Texas and is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan, Washington, and Texas.
