Global engineering firm Walter P Moore is a signatory firm of the 1.5˚C COP26 Communiqué which was sent to international government leaders headed to the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26). The Communiqué is an open letter to government leaders and demonstrates the signatories commitment to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5˚C carbon budget and demands governments do the same. More than 60 of the largest and most influential AEC firms responsible for over $300 billion in annual construction, along with two dozen organizations representing over one million building industry professionals worldwide have participated in the Communiqué.

“Walter P Moore understands the importance of reducing carbon emissions caused by the built environment. Since 2002, the firm has actively embraced our role as engineers seeking to reduce the embodied carbon of our designs,” says Dirk Kestner, Principal and Director of Sustainable Design for Walter P Moore. “We participate in many industry-leading activities to achieve meaningful carbon reductions in the built environment. This includes our involvement in the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF), leadership on U.S. Green Building Council committees, founding roles in CLF regional hubs and the Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment Program known as SE 2050, sponsorship of the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator tool, and as an active participant in developing local climate plans.”

Global government leaders will convene for climate negotiations at COP 26 from October 31 through November 12 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“As design professionals, we shape the built world. Hence, we should be cognizant of the carbon footprint of our design solutions,” says Dilip Choudhuri, President and CEO for Walter P Moore. “We need to use carbon-smart materials and aspire to be climate positive. At Walter P Moore, we have made this commitment and are driven by the challenge.”

As part of their efforts to reduce carbon in the built environment, Walter P Moore released Embodied Carbon, A Clearer View of Carbon Emissions, a report which details essential measures the AEC industry can incorporate to ensure near-term reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
