Overview

International engineering firm Walter P Moore officially joined the Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment Program (SE 2050) as part of the firm’s commitment to improving the global environment. Walter P Moore and its employees will incorporate SE 2050’s mission to understand, reduce, and ultimately eliminate embodied carbon in the firm’s construction projects by 2050.

“Walter P Moore is honored to be part of SE 2050 further solidifying the firm’s commitment to reducing embodied carbon emissions,” says Dilip Choudhuri, president and CEO of Walter P Moore. “The engineering industry must address their obligation to using carbon-smart materials to achieve net zero by 2050.”

“Our desire to be among the first Signatory Firms for the SE 2050 Commitment is driven by an obligation to our employees and our clients who want to achieve embodied carbon reductions in the design and construction of their projects,” says Blair Hanuschak, managing principal, and executive director for structures at Walter P Moore.

Embodied carbon reductions are essential, though often overlook component to net zero design.

“We intend to transform the way structural engineers address the important issue of making meaningful reductions to embodied carbon,” says Dirk Kestner, principal, and director of sustainable design at Walter P Moore. “SE 2050 aligns with our other ongoing initiatives, such as engagement in the Carbon Leadership Forum and sponsorship of the EC3 tool. Furthermore, we are developing our Embodied Carbon Action Plan and plan to contribute to the database.”

SE 2050 was formed in response to the SE 2050 Challenge issued in 2019 by the Carbon Leadership Forum and the SE 2050 Commitment Program developed by the Sustainability Committee of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Additionally, Walter P Moore recently released a new stewardship report Embodied Carbon, A Clearer View of Carbon Emissions, which details essential measures the AEC industry can incorporate to ensure near-term reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
