Overview

Kansas City Business Journal recently announced its annual Capstone Awards at the Arvest Bank Theatre in Midland. The Capstone Awards celebrated the previous year’s top commercial real estate projects in 11 categories.

Entries were judged on their impact on Kansas City, such as job creation, innovation, best use of land, site plan, development of surrounding neighborhoods, visual plan, amenities, and being environmentally friendly. Of the 32 finalists, three were Walter P Moore projects, winning top honors in their respective categories.

Industrial

Kansas City Aviation Overhaul Base
“Description: This project, which was unique due to the facility’s history and architecture, involved reroofing the massive overhaul base adjacent to Kansas City International Airport.”

Public Health

Children’s Mercy Research Institute (pictured)
“The building is one of 31 pediatrics-exclusive research facilities in the U.S. The nine-story structure has an all-glass facade. Its design incorporates scientific imagery to reflect the research being done inside. For example, the main staircase resembles a DNA strand.”

Johnson County Medical Examiner Facility
“Johnson County had been contracting out medical examination services, but residents saw the need for the county to have its own facility and passed a public safety sales tax to fund construction.”
