Synopsis
This presentation highlights how the project team for Georgia Tech’s new Thomas A. Fanning Student Athlete Performance Center embedded material circularity into a major athletics facility by salvaging and reusing structural steel from the adjacent Bobby Dodd Stadium. The demolition of several stadium bays created an opportunity to reclaim existing members, prompting early collaboration among the architect, contractor, structural engineer, fabricator, and demolition contractor. The team developed detailed salvage plans, coordinated site walks, and aligned on sequencing, safety, and deconstruction strategies. The session will share lessons learned, challenges and solutions, and the sustainable design outcomes and embodied carbon savings. This case study demonstrates how intentional planning can turn demolition constraints into meaningful sustainability gains.
