Overview
Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal A redevelopment includes a new consolidated parking facility and ConRAC to streamline operations.
The new 2.7 million sq ft. six-level, pre-cast concrete facility consists of two garage structures, offering 2,703 public and 3,380 rental car parking spaces. The objective of the new facility is to provide safe, walkable accessibility for airport passengers via the pedestrian bridge leading to the new terminal.
Design & Sustainability Initiatives
The Ready Return garage’s top three levels provide public parking with easy bridge access; the first three house rental customer service counters, pickup, and drop off. Customer wayfinding is prominently displayed throughout, while traffic circulation ensures vehicles do not queue up. The adjacent Quick Turn Around garage includes 12 car washes, vacuum stations, 54 fueling positions, service bays, and vehicle fleet storage.
The facility provides more than 150 EV charging stations within the public parking area and 65 within the rental car center. PV panels cover the entire ConRAC area and supplement power to the facility, as well as contribute electricity to Terminal A. Wind loading criteria was thoroughly researched to develop appropriate design loads to ensure an adequate support system for the 12,708 PV panels covering 364,000 sq ft.
Efficient LED lighting, water reclamation, and air quality system installations enhance sustainability initiatives in the facility, which meets LEED Silver requirements.
