Walter P Moore is providing the structural engineering for the new Medical University of South Carolina’s 11 story Children’s Hospital and Women’s Pavilion in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The new facility will provide several private rooms for infants and their parents in the neonatal intensive care unit and increase the square footage for all inpatient rooms by 80%. The project also includes additions and modifications to MUHA’s Central Energy Plant & connecting infrastructure.

This Hospital has several structural challenges which include high seismic loads, 157 mph hurricane winds, flood loading and liquefiable soils (Site Class F). Walter P Moore is working together to deliver this project in collaboration with our local Charleston engineering partner, ADC Engineering. Due to the complexity of this project, the design team is consulting with Walter P Moore seismic experts to assist with design criteria and special seismic detailing including the special moment frames and buckling restrained braced frames.
