Overview

At 3.1 million square feet, SoFi is currently the largest stadium in the NFL and the first indoor-outdoor stadium to be constructed. SoFi Stadium achieved many industry “firsts,” making it one of the world’s most innovative entertainment venues to date.

About the project

In September 2020, the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers launched their NFL football season in SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. The centerpiece of Hollywood Park, SoFi is a 300-acre mixed-use project developed by Los Angeles Rams Owner and Chairman E.Stanley Kroenke.

To create SoFi Stadium, the design and construction team overcame a myriad of technical, management, and site challenges. In the end, the team created the world’s greatest stadium just 500 yards from an active earthquake fault and directly below the two primary flight approach paths to Los Angeles International Airport, just three miles away.

The soaring roof canopy is the showpiece of the stadium and is comprised of 1.2 million square feet featuring 800,000 square feet of ETFE panels, the largest of its kind in North America. A freeform curved shell, the single 800-foot-wide span canopy houses three venues: SoFi Stadium, YouTube Theater, and American Airlines Plaza. As the structural engineer, Walter P Moore used a performance-based design approach to ensure the canopy is safe despite the seismic zone, isolating the roof on triple pendulum dampers atop its support columns—an industry first.

Walter P Moore created three seismically independent structural systems that help define the beautiful project aesthetic. Each of the three complex systems performs predictably and reliably, keeping the stadium and its patrons safe during seismic events. SoFi Stadium demonstrates engineering excellence in a very visible and beautiful way.

SoFi Stadium is slated to host Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and will host the College National Championship Game in 2023, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2028 Summer Olympics, among other important events.
